Dementia - Will Having Good Health Habits Defend You?

Welcome to 2009,

are you making resolutions for better health,
more exercise,
learning something new or
building additional income streams?

2008 has been a challenging year for many
and I think all of us are
ready to start off the
New Year with a new attitude and sense of
determination.

The reason I wanted to write this message with a title about Dementia is that so many of us make resolutions about improving our eating and exercise habits, more time with our loved ones, changes in our lives for our longevity and finances… then life gets in the way and
many of those resolutions (goals) fall by the wayside.

We need to take control and have valid important reasons to follow through with our chosen changes and adjustments.

Below is an article from a new friend giving important reasons for us to pay attention to what our bodies are telling us and to do something about it.

Not All Dementia Is Called Alzheimer's
Vascular cognitive impairment impedes ability to organize thoughts, but it is preventable

(Health Day News) A common form of dementia often mistaken for Alzheimer's can be prevented with good health habits, a new report says.

Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), the second most common cause of dementia, occurs in up to 4 percent of Americans over age 65 and up to 20 percent of those with some form of dementia. Brain damage from multiple small strokes, which can occur from narrowing or blocked arteries in the brain, are often the cause of VCI.

An overview of the disease, published in the December issue of Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource, notes that people can greatly reduce their risk of developing the disease by lowering their blood pressure, quitting smoking, and keeping diabetes and cholesterol levels under control.

VCI shares Alzheimer's symptoms such as confusion, agitation, language and memory problems, and unsteady gait and falls. However, the first symptom of VCI usually is the declining ability to organize thoughts or actions. In Alzheimer's, memory problems are usually the first sign of the condition.

Is it preventable?

Making sweeping changes in eating, exercising and lifestyle may seem to be a good way to kick off the New Year but my personal feeling is that if you make too many changes all at once it becomes harder to stick with any of them. Family members may have something to say too. A better choice might be to decide on 2 or 3 changes to make now and plan on adding another 2 or 3 changes in a few weeks.

One of the best changes in eating you can make is to add plants. Eating a plant-based diet is healthiest. Choose plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats, like olive and canola oil. Example. If you normally eat a meat, a green and a grain for a meal, you can add additional vegetables yellow and red with very little calorie increase. A multi grain roll instead of dinner roll, or a sandwich on dark rye, or even air popped corn instead of chips can increase fiber and nutrients.

Another easy to make change is adding good supplements to your daily nutrient intake. A multi-vitamin may help balance out foods that are grown in depleted soils or even poor food choices. Of course, there can be too much of a good thing. It’s important not to go overboard with vitamins. While a multivitamin can help fill some of the gaps in a less than optimal diet, too much can be harmful. In general, stick close to standard recommended doses in a multivitamin.

Marty and I both believe strongly in the healing effects of taking Pearl Nutrients because of the results we have seen in ourselves and in our friends. But you don’t have to only take our experiences. Scientists have been studying the health effects of taking Pearl for some time. In several human clinical trials blood pressure declined 13 percent systolic and 15 percent diastolic It has also been reported that patients notice fewer headaches, less dizziness and irritability, and improved sleep after taking pearl powder.

The list of studies is pages long and I’m not going to put them here. I will share more information with you about living a better, longer and more prosperous life. The information will be from many sources and different authors and I welcome your comments. Writing about the things that are working well for me in both personal and business as well as information I have and new things I learn always seems to lead me in another direction. Interesting, yes? There will be questions for you too.

What do you see as the single most important challenge in your life in the new year?

I see clutter as the single biggest thing affecting my life at this time and my
challenge is to really See It – Decide if it is important – If it is, Find A Place For It – If it isn’t, Give, Sell or Through It Away. Starting now with my Dining Room Table used for eating, crafting, meetings, desk and occasional household repairs. (It’s a very good size with all of the leaves in it) Next is my computer.

Last night we rang out the old and rang in the new. And more--much more--can change than simply the dates on the calendar. You can resolve today to change your entire life...or any aspect of your self and your experience that you choose.

Be the best you can be in Health & Prosperity in 2009 and the rest of your life !!!

  1. This is a very important topic, especially for women. We can never underestimate the value of a healthy Lifestyle and great choices in the food we eat in order to be well and filled with a vitality for Life in this New Year.

I hope people take the time to reflect on the points that you've made and consider what they might do daily to take care of themselves in a way that allows them to enjoy these precious days ahead.
